About Us
Greetings from the Ambassador
As the Ambassador of the United States of America to Cameroon, I would like to welcome you to “Septentrion camerounais,” the Virtual Presence Post (VPP) of the United States of America for the three Northern provinces of Cameroon.
VPPs are a new outreach tool of U.S. diplomacy designed to bring together information about the official activities of the United States in a region where there is not direct access to Embassy or Consular services. Because we do not have a permanent physical location in the Northern provinces, “Septentrion camerounais” will be a “virtual embassy” represented by this web site. As we develop our VPP, we hope to include information on this site that will be of particular interest to the people of the Northern provinces. We hope this electronic communication and visits to the Northern provinces by me and others from the U.S. Embassy will fulfill our goal of building goodwill and mutual understanding between the people of the United States of America and people living in the Adamawa, North, and Far-North provinces of Cameroon.
The United States has been a close partner in the development of the Septentrion since Cameroon’s independence. Nearly 3,000 Peace Corps volunteers have served in Cameroon, many in the Northern provinces, since 1962. American citizens have been and are currently engaged in medical, educational, and church-related activities in the region. USAID, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Embassy’s Self Help and Democracy and Human Rights Funds have development programs in the region. The entire U.S. Embassy team in Yaounde is committed to continued efforts to foster mutual understanding as well as for increased economic growth and development in the region.
Since arriving in Cameroon in September 2007, I have had the opportunity to visit the Adamawa and North provinces, to see the countryside, and to meet with Government officials, local authorities, religious leaders, civil society groups, students, and citizens. These trips have given me a great appreciation for the warmth and hospitality of the people of the Septentrion. I look forward to completing my tour of the Septentrion soon, where I will visit all three provinces with other representatives from the U.S. Embassy in Yaounde. During this trip, we will formally launch the VPP, recognizing a special connection with the people of the Septentrion. We hope to use this web site to share the rich diversity of both of our countries and strengthen the enduring bonds between the people of Cameroon and the United States.
Thank you.
